Becky and I are knitting these socks together, even though we are roughly 16,000 kilometres distant from one another, with a fourteen hour time-difference. A two-person knitalong, if you will (my goofy damn husband is calling it The Great Sock-off of 2008, and keeps asking who’s winning. I try to explain that it’s a knit-along, not a knit-against, but this is apparently too subtle a distinction for his tiny man-brain to comprehend).
Meet Pink Salto, a thing of beauty and a joy forever – or at least until I frog it tomorrow morning. Yep, this beautiful, perfect almost-an-entire-sock, with its elegantly curved cables and its totally-perfect-on-the-very-first-try gusset must be frogged. Why? Why? WHY? I hear you shriek, much the way I did. Well, this fine example of the socky breed is not for me. It is a gift for someone with feet that are a good bit wider than mine, and who also has quite a high instep. Given that I had to fight to get it on over my heel (and even harder to get it back off again), there is no way that this is going to fit the intended recipient. Thus, I must now rip back three days worth of work and do it over with bigger needles.
Becky, I guess this means you’re winning. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and curl up in a foetal position and whimper for a while.

Does this person know you’re making her socks? Couldn’t you, um, decide they’re for someone else? Someone with a narrower foot? Just saying.
They’re beautiful. But that’s probably not what you want to hear right now…

Awwww man!! That totally sucks. My plan is to finish Salto #1 and then knit a second ocean toes before the second Salto, so you will have no trouble catching and then overtaking me. The instep cable is so cool so far!
P.S. At least your husband pays attention. Mine hasn’t noticed anything I was knitting since 1990 or so.
Amy: She knows I’m making socks, just not that I’m making these specific socks. Before I tried it on, I was teetering right on the brink of keeping them for myself, but they are sooo tight going over my heel, and as I said it was a real struggle to get them back off again after I took the pic. Plus I really want the person in question to have this particular yarn.
Regenia: Honey, I’m a size 8.5, and they barely go on me. The yarn is Araucania Ranco Multy from Argentina, and it is every bit as nice to work with as it is to look at!
Becky: The whole pattern is cool! I’ve been having so much fun knitting it. Once I got into the rhythm of the thing, it has just zoomed along. And there is a down-side to the paying attention thing – it makes stealth projects kinda tricky.
And it’s not a competition? LOL
Seriously, I’m sorry to hear you have to frog it – it’s something I seem to do quite a bit, so you have my sympathy!
