Good news, bad news.

2 Feb

The good news is, school went back on Monday.

The bad news is, Sasquatch has whooping cough.

The good news is, he has been fully immunised, so it’s only a mild dose.

The bad news is, he’s off school until Tuesday next week.

The good news is, he likes the taste of his antibiotics.

The bad news is, said medication is doing unspeakable things to his digestion.

The good news is, the rest of us are okay, so Boyo can go back to school tomorrow (he had today off while we waited for the test results).

The bad news is, Sasquatch and I are pretty much confined to the house, because while he’s feeling okay (apart from the cough), he’s still contagious and thus has to stay well away from pretty much everyone, but especially babies and pregnant women.

Oh, and it’s been raining.

The good news is, that means enforced couch time, which of course means lots of lovely knitting time.

There’s no down side to that.

I am glad the whooping cough is mild and that everyone is OK. That is good news!! As is the enforced knitting time!!!

Thanks, Cindy. Sasquatch is doing better, the coughing fits are fewer and further between, and the yoghurt I insist on feeding him at every meal is getting the job done (although we are thinking of changing his name to “The Swamp-Gas Kid”).

Well bummer about the bad news, but I think in the end it sounds pretty good, certainly not as bad as it could have been. Hurrah for lots of lovely knitting time! You deserve it!

How’d he get it if he was immunized? And can you get ahold of some acidophilus or probiotics? I spent 3 1/2 weeks on antibiotics strong enough to choke a horse (doxycycline; it’s wretched poisonous stuff) but the digestive system remained okay thanks to probiotics with every meal.

There’s some whooping cough in RI too, tho not near us. Weird.

Apparently, this is a really nasty strain. According to the doctor, there are nearly 40 reported cases in town (population approx. 3,000), and all of them have been immunised. What I want to know was how he got it over the school holidays: we’ve hardly been anywhere for the last six weeks. I grant you, there’s been a couple of trips to the park and/or library, but it’s not like he was swimming in a pool of— Oh, wait. Swimming lessons. Public pool. Every day for two weeks. Bingo!

I’m feeding him lots and lots of yoghurt with acidophilus/bifidus cultures. Best I can do for the poor little bean, as he’d never be able to swallow those big-arse capsules.

Ooo, hope he gets better soon and that you and hubby are fully immunised too!

The downside is a sore bottom from sitting too long but attending to a sick child will take care of that!

I think the bottom in question is a little too well upholstered to be worried about couch-sores!

Sasquatch is doing better already, and the rest of the family are immunised, although the doc did say to keep a close eye out for coughing or runny noses. My best friend dropped in for coffee on Friday, and I had to warn her off. Good thing I did, because it turns out that she’s not immunised due to a bad reaction to the vaccine when she was a baby.

I’m seriously considering tying a yellow rag to the front door like they did in days of yore to indicate a “plague house”.

That’s yuk. Poor Sasquatch, and oh dear for you. We have had a coughing sick person this week, but not whooping – this was an infection plus virus, with a horrible fever (39.1*C!!!!). She is on the mend now, hopefully if the coughing stops and she has no temp spikes today she can start school tomorrow – first day of Prep!!

I wonder, did you mention the swimming pool connection to the doc? Hope all is well soon!

No, I haven’t yet – it literally occurred to me as I was typing that reply to Amy. Sasquatch has a follow-up appointment on Tuesday, to make sure he’s okay to go back to school; I’ll mention it then. Hope V is better for tomorrow – she’d be so disappointed to miss her first day!
